After the Easter break I was finally back in the Bernabeu.
Going into this game Real Madrid had basically lost all hope for a LaLiga title this season, but a win would at least give them a very slim glimmer of hope. They faced a strong defensive Girona side who sat 12th in the table. Real Madrid looked to bounce back after their embarrassing loss against Mallorca. This week felt like make of break for Arbeloa especially with their midweek UCL clash with Bayern Munich.
There was not much to say about this game. Real Madrid in the first half really struggled to break down Girona and many of the chances were half chances at best. Although, Real Madrid dominated possession and chances, Girona had the better chances in the half. Second half began with a big chance for Bellingham which was wasted. The breakthrough came from none other than Valverde who blasted in a shot from the edge of the box. The ball was loose and he struck it clean towards Gazzaniga’s left hand side, however, the goalkeeper should have done better in my opinion to save it. Real Madrid’s wastefulness was punished as Thomas Lemar scored soon after. He received the ball on the edge of the box and shot across himself with power and the ball flew into Lunin’s near post. MbappĂ© was no where to be seen in this fixture and was very disappointing.
POTM: Goes to Valverde. Honestly I don’t think any Real Madrid players played well. Valverde ever since the turn of the year has been Real Madrid’s most important player and his goal was proof of that.
