I was fortunate enough to attend the prematch press conference for Manchester City ahead of their 6th consecutive clash with Real Madrid in the knockout round of the Champions League. This was my first time attending a press conference for the Champions League and what a way to start with Pep Guardiola.
Pep’s mannerism during the press conference was really entertaining to listen to. Pep was asked a variety of questions. One common topic of discussion was the Manchester City squad and the identity of said squad. Pep responded saying that this squad is very young and hungry. Each time they face Real Madrid it always changes. This time new signings Guehi and Semenyo have arrived to change the game. Pep spoke about proactiveness and consistency being crucial in order to progress in the competition and the difficulty of a new revamped squad. Another common topic was the ‘regular, yearly’ fixture between Real Madrid and Manchester City. Pep mentioned how each time the game plan is different. Both squads have different players. However, Manchester City have learnt lessons from previous editions of the competitions, especially against teams like Tottenham, Chelsea and Real Madrid on multiple occasions. One question that was particularly entertaining was one about Mbappé’s injury and Pep’s opinion on it. Pep comedically responded surprised asking if his opinion really matters. Overall, Pep seemed confident facing a regular opponent.
The player that attended the press conference was Italy Number 1 Gianluigi Donnarumma. He was asked about the favourites to win the competition. Real Madrid coach Arbeloa stated that Real Madrid are the favourites in the competition. Donnarumma conceded that of course Real Madrid should always be one of the favourites in the competition based on their history. However, he was asked if Manchester City are favourites to win the UCL. He stated that it is possible to win it. It is important to adapt to the circumstances and situations in the tournament. He finished saying that Manchester City has a strong squad and that it is possible. The goalkeeper was then asked about his role in the dressing room being one of the more experienced players. He stated that there are other leaders in the squad such as Bernardo Silva and John Stones. Nonetheless, he is always happy to lend a hand and give advice to the younger players in the squad. He was then asked about Courtois and Mbappé. Firstly he was compared to Courtois and Donnarumma was flattered with the comparison and always admired the Belgian and regards him as one of the best keepers in the world. He finished off comedically, hoping that Courtois would let City score. He was then asked about Mbappé’s absence in the fixture. He admitted to the advantage that Mbappé’s absence gives City not playing against one of the best players in the world. Donnarumma knows about the frenchman’s abilities thanks to their time together in PSG. Nonetheless, he hoped Mbappé a speedy recovery.
Overall, this press conference was a surreal experience. I believe that Manchester City will return to Manchester victorious in this fixture. From what I can gleam from the press conference, there is a silent confidence in the Manchester City camp.
