This was my first-time visiting the Movistar Arena to watch Real Madrid Basket face-off against the Lithuanian team Zalgiris in the EuroLeague.
This was my first ever basketball game I attended. I follow basketball but more as a casual fan that enjoys the sport. Especially, being from the UK it makes it practically impossible to go to a NBA game. Nonetheless, I was not disappointed.
The whole pre-game experience seemed very similar to my perception of a NBA pre-game. Lots of music was played with cheerleaders ready to dance. In general, the atmosphere was very similar to what I would expected (given my limited experience). The support throughout the game was deafening from both teams (which helps being indoors).
Some players for Real Madrid I recognised like Tre Lyles who played in the NBA.
As a viewing experience I much prefer basketball to American football. The sport itself is much more engaging as there is constant action with little breaks in play. The pace of the game was fast at times. But what surprised me the most was the lack of three point shooting, given how many NBA teams heavily rely on outside shooting. Notwithstanding this, the skill level and athleticism on display was impressive. As well as the physicality of the players with lots of fouls being called.
The fourth quarter was a proper nail biter. Especially as we got later into the clutch. Every basket and possession seemed vital. The game went back and forth through this period of time with each foul call being met by extreme anger from fans on each side. The game got to 100-99 with 2 seconds left which lead to a ‘Hail Mary’ three point attempt from Zalgiris. This shot felt like it was in slow motion as the whole stadium including myself went quiet but the shot was missed.
One player that I wanted to mention was Zalgiris’ Sylvian Francisco. He dropped 33pts and 11 assists in the game. What impressed me more was his elite shooting in the fourth quarter where he kept making three after three to keep Zalgiris in the game. Unfortunately, it was not enough but I would still have him as my Player of the Game.
Overall, it was an amazing experience and I look forward to going to another game in the future.
